The St. Augustine Music Festival was founded in 2007 by Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra members Jorge A. Peña (viola) and Jin Kim-Peña (cello), with the invaluable participation and support of many other musicians and the local community.

 

Conceived as a free classical music concert series to celebrate the rich artistic and cultural traditions of St. Augustine, the annual festival has quickly become a highlight of the summer season.

 

Jorge Peña - A former member of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra came to the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in 1996. Honduran born, Mr. Peña was educated in the US, attended Columbus State University and graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Music with a degree in performance and chamber music where he studied with Philadelphia Orchestra principal viola and president of the Curtis Institute Roberto Diaz, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra principal viola Richard Field, and Julliard quartet member Earl Carlys. His chamber music experience include appearances with the National Gallery of Art Chamber Orchestra, the Virginia Chamber Orchestra, the Atlanta Virtuosi, Tanglewood Music Center, Grand Teton Music Festival, University of North Florida and the Ritz Chamber Players as well as innumerable solo and small ensemble recitals in North America, Central America, Europe and Asia.

His teaching experience keeps his private studio competitive, a frequent clinician for chamber music as well as solo master classes at LaVilla school of the arts, Douglas Anderson School of the arts and the University of North Florida. His students have attended the Manhattan School of Music, North Western University, Yale University, Eastman School of Music, The Harid Conservatory, University of Central Florida and the University of North Florida.

Mr. Peña coaches violin and viola for the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra and coaches chamber music in the JSYO chamber music program.He is currently in the faculty of the Prelude Chamber Music Camp. Mr. Peña is founder of the Sonora Ensemble, the Movado string quartet and founder and Artistic Director of the St. Augustine Music Festival.
